Qualities of God's Chosen Leaders (Moses/Fathers/Elders)

THEY ARE EXAMPLES

• Moses demonstrated leadership qualities in Egypt and Midian.
• Fathers will have no credibility to lead if they do not live what they teach.
• Elders cannot get a congregation to follow where they do not lead by example (I Pet. 5:3).

THEY ARE ABLE TO TRAIN OTHERS

• Moses prepared the people and another leader to go on when he was no longer with them.
• Fathers must do more than control their children, they must train them to do well when the parental restraints are removed (Eph. 6:4, Prov. 22:6).
• Elders must not just be commanders, lording it over the flock, they must train the members to make wise spiritual decisions even when they are not around (I Pet. 5:2-3, I Tim. 3:2, Jer. 3:15).

THEY ARE IN AWE OF GOD

• Awe/fear of God is the beginning of all good spiritual things (Ex. 3:6, Prov. 1:7, Psa. 111:10, Prov. 10:27, Prov. 14:26-27, Prov. 19:23).
• Fathers must be in awe of God to lead their families to respect and obey God (Psa. 34:11, Deut. 4:10, Prov. 15:16, Eph. 6:4).
• Elders must be in awe of God to be a steward of God and to hold to the Word of God (Titus 1:7-9).

THEY MUST BE SERVANTS OF THOSE THEY LEAD

• To be a good servant, a leader must have humility, patience, and unselfishness (Num. 12:3, Mark 10:43-45).
• Fathers must give up things, especially time, to lead their families (I Tim. 5:8, Eph. 6:4, Phil. 2:4).
• Elders must be humble (Tit. 1:7, I Tim. 3:6), patient (I Tim. 3:3 NASB, Titus 1:7, Titus 1:8 NASB), unselfish (I Tim. 3:3 NASB, Titus 1:7), and hospitable (“fond of guests,” Titus 1:8, I Tim. 3:2).
