Hold To God's Unchanging Hand

As this time of uncertainty continues, we need to increase our faith through diligent Bible study [Rom. 10:17].  Let us remind ourselves daily what God has done for his people in times past – and where those people went astray.

We don’t know what tomorrow holds, but our Father in Heaven does.

Let us always try to remain faithful to God and trust him to do what is right!  “For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever” [Psa. 37:28-29].

One of the overarching truths of the Bible is that our God is in control of his creation! [Pro. 19:21].

Everything belongs to God! [Psa. 24:1].

Everything good comes from God! [Jam. 1:17]

There is nothing like our God! [Isa. 46:9-10].

Nothing can happen that would ever surprise God! [II Kin. 19:27]

No one can do anything without his knowledge! [Heb. 4:13]

He has the power to accomplish anything he desires! [Jer. 32:27]

If we have any need, he will provide! [Phil 4:19]

Any of our cares can be cast upon him! [I Pet. 5:7]

The lyricist Mary Jane “Jennie” Bain Wilson lived a tough life, at least from an earthly perspective.  She contracted Typhoid Fever at a young age – surviving only to be confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of her relatively short time here.  She endured several other physical ailments through the years and eventually died of renal failure.  Still, Jennie B. Wilson was a strong woman of faith.

One afternoon 114 years ago, Wilson was reading the 89th Psalm.  After reaching the 13th verse, she put down her Bible, picked up her journal and wrote the words to a hymn we often sing today:

Time is filled with swift transition

Naught of earth unmoved can stand

Build your hopes on things eternal,

Hold to God’s unchanging hand.

Trust in him who will not leave you,

Whatsoever years may bring.

If by earthly friends forsaken,

Still more closely to him cling.

Covet not this world’s vain riches

That so rapidly decay,

Seek to gain the heav’nly treasures,

They will never pass away.

When your journey is completed,

If to God you have been true,

Fair and bright the home in glory

Your enraptured soul will view.
